Climbing

Imagine waking up with a choice of sport and trad climbing in your backyard? Crags at Gecko Rock comprise sandstone and quartzite, and have, on the sport routes, a well deserved reputation for being ‘thin’ and ‘technical’.

All of the climbs are single-pitch and there are a multitude of routes from which to choose – enough to occupy advanced climbers and novices alike. Most crags have a well-maintained approach path and are within about an hours walk from camp. Development of easier grades for novice climbers has been afforded much attention with climbs starting at grade 13.

Top rope and abseil outings are offered, especially for those without climbing gear and as an add-on to team building events. Gecko Rock has hosted a Mountain Club of SA (MCSA) meet and was well complimented on the facilities and the routes.

There are still many routes to be discovered and climbers are encouraged to visit us and get their own route recognized. For climbers who make use of the camp or other accommodation at Gecko, there is no charge for access to the crags.

A day pass for visiting climbers is R50.00 per person.

Tsunami Wall

Approach

About halfway between the reception and De Wets Rus Camp you will see a big blue water tank. Park here and follow the path up to the obvious crag on top of the hill.

Gecko Crag

Approach

Start at Echo Valley Camp. From here, follow the path behind the camp, past the wind pump down the valley (left) until you reach a sign for Gecko Crag pointing (right) up the rocky ridge. Follow the ridge (path and cairns) for a while till it veers left almost at the crest. Drop down along the side of the crag and approach the crag from the west on a final climb along the path until the crag appears on the right.

Arch Enemies

A newish crag that needs some bolt maintenance and cleaning. Some of the routes are not ideally bolted and some anchors should be repositioned. Please check with the owners on the currentstatus.

Approach

From De Wets Rus Camp drive to about 200 metres before the cottage on the otherside of the koppie and park at the start of the recognised trail (Rheebok Vlakte Trail), from where you can clearly see the crag up and to the right. Follow the signposted path up to the crag (not the Rheebok Trailpath).
